F.O.G. (Finger of God) Firearms and Cartridge Company is a relatively new company, run by John and Diana. They graciously allowed us to film a mini-documentary that features an intimate look into their company, family, and history.
America is in a fight over its guns. Not surprisingly, religion factors into the dispute. If Americans are to have an informed conversation about guns, they must recognize that, for many citizens on all sides of the gun debate, the issue is not simply political, it is religious. This is no surprise, for guns, like religion, deal with the realities of life, death, will, power, and freedom. The current interdisciplinary project seeks to understand the important intersection of guns and religion.

this is fascinating, and in some ways deeply disturbing to me. But it reminded me of a question many of us who are gun control advocates have wondered about: would gun advocates support controls which place id on ammunition? Digital tech could make that possible, and then we could trace any piece of ammunition. I'd be curious what these folk think of such an idea...
ReplyDeleteGood question, Mary. One thing I'm learning is that gun owners are a very diverse mix of people. So broadly speaking, I am quite certain one could find gun owners in favor of tagging bullets with some kind of identity marker, and others who would be staunchly opposed to it. As it stands, the current debate in America around guns is at an absolute impasse, and I have often wondered if innovative technologies will generate opportunities for consensus that the current discourse frankly cannot.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm not really sure what John and Diana would say. I'm planning to see them soon, however, when they're in the area, and I will try to remember to ask them.
